Question and Answer with Jen ...
Q: Who has been the biggest influence in your life and why?
A: My mom. She’s a strong independent woman who came from very little and is now very successful and educated. She has always pushed me to be a better woman and person.
Q: Something that many people don’t know about you is?
A: I’m related to Benjamin Franklin. He’s my fifth great uncle, but then again he had a ton of kids.
Q: What is your favorite sport besides soccer?
A: Basketball. The game is always moving and going kind of like soccer. It’s interesting to watch, it takes a lot of natural talent to play that sport and I can appreciate that.
Q: Your hero in life is?
A: My dad. He’s always been so positive in anything I chose to do. He supported me through everything. He’s the least selfish person I know, he would give anything for his family. He has been the one that would always tell me “you can” when the rest of the world was telling me “you can’t”. You don’t find a person like that every day.
Q: Your favorite movie is?
A: Steal Magnolias. I have just always loved that movie. I’ve watched it at least 100 times and I cry every time!
Q: Your favorite TV show is?
A: Weeds. It’s on HBO, but I just started watching it and now I’m hooked!
Q: When you were little you wanted to be?
A: A CIA agent! I always had wanted to be a 007 agent, I don’t know why, but being a spy and working in the government always seemed so exciting. Movies of course helped with that, but even now I think it would be a pretty awesome job.
Q: Your motto is?
A: “Better to burn out then fade away.” When I get tired and think why in the world did I play a fifth year I think of that quote. It’s better for me to give everything I’ve got now, because even if it’s not enough I won’t ever look back and say “I wish I would have…” that’s not me, I’m not a regret type of a person, I’m getting the work done now even if that means burning out.
Q: What made you decide to come to Boise State?
A: I transferred back here for a lot of reasons. I had played for the coaches before and enjoyed my experiences with them. I also had family here. I’ve had the opportunity to see my niece grow up and be a part of her life. I love being Auntie Jen Jen.
Q: What has surprised you most about college and why?
A: To get A’s you’ve got to work really, really hard. Maybe not you’re first two years, but you’re last two you’ve got to fight for the grade. No one’s going to give it to you in my major, you’ve got to study, sleep, study and study some more.
Q: What’s your favorite class and why?
A: Political Science 311 Comparative Foreign Policy. Dr. Raymond was my teacher and he made it so interesting. Every day we talked about really sweet stuff like spying, breaking codes and intercepting foreign intelligence. It was awesome.
Q: Since coming to Boise State, you’ve learned?
A: How to meet deadlines, be places on time, pay bills, be a good teammate and survive my daily life. I think that’s what college and sports are supposed to teach you.
Q: Your favorite thing about the city of Boise is?
A: People are so nice. I’ve spent a little time in other places and Boise is the only place that you can walk down the street and people smile at you and say hi for no other reason than they are just happy people.
Q: What do you like best about the coaching staff in general?
A: They don’t just want us to be good soccer players; they want us to leave here with a degree and with the general sense of what it takes to be good people. They have told us over and over again, if they get us out of here with a degree and have taught us how to be successful, self sufficient, respectful adults, then they have succeeded.
Q: What do you like best about the team in general?
A: We respect each other young and old. People on the team know they don’t just deserve respect, they know they’ve got to earn it, and everyone does day in and day out.
Q: Do you have a nickname that your teammates gave you? What is it and why that name?
A: Just Jen, no more, no less.
Q: What two schools do you see as Boise State’s main rivals?
A: Fresno State and Utah State. It’s always a battle with those two teams. You can see the looks on everyone’s faces in the locker room when we’re playing one of those teams, like they know this game is going to be a knock down drag out fight until the final whistle blows.
Q: Which teammate would win “America’s Most Talented,” and why?
A: Cat, she’s an amazing artist, and possibly and amazing tattoo drawer.
Q: Which teammate would win “America’s Next Top Model,” and why?
A: Malia. She’s like 7 feet tall and has that natural beauty inside and out.
Q: Which teammate would win “Survivor,” and why?
A: Jayne. She’s kind of gnarly and I feel like she’s a survivor in her life and in her position on the field. She gets knocked down and gets right back up no matter how tired or sore she is. Someone like that could dominate that show.
