Boise State Defense Shines in Second Spring Scrimmage
COURTESY: BECCA FAULDS           RELEASE: 04/08/2009

BOISE, Idaho – The rain was falling but the defense was shining bright at Bronco Stadium during the second open football scrimmage of the spring, Wednesday afternoon.

One of the many defensive highlights of the afternoon came when junior cornerback Brandyn Thompson grabbed a pass by Kellen Moore to record the only interception of the scrimmage. Overall, the first team offense held the first team defense scoreless on 14 plays and just one first down, while recording two turnovers and a sack by freshman defensive tackle Michael Atkinson.

Offensively, the Broncos  proved to be successful in the red zone as two of the offenses five touchdowns were on goal line possessions, in which the offense started its drive inside the five-yard line (Tommy Gallarda four-yard pass from Moore; Matt Kaiserman one-yard run).

Standing out among the offense was running back D.J. Harper who recorded 67 yards on five attempts to average 13.4 yards per carry. In addition, the junior scored a touchdown on a 17-yard run. However, it was a 67-yard pass from Mike Coughlin that got the crowd on its feet as he connected with Josh Hill for a touchdown.  Coughlin led the quarterbacks completing 3-4, for 95 yards and a touchdown.

While quarterback Drew Hawkins may not have thrown a touchdown pass during the scrimmage, he made his way into the end zone to record a TD of his own on a 27-yard run.

Overall, the Broncos ran 67 plays for a total of 311 total yards and recorded five touchdowns (two passing, three rushing).

The Broncos will return to the practice field Friday for another week of practice before concluding spring workouts, Friday, April 17, with the annual Spring Game.
