Shawn Garus enters his second season at the helm of the Boise State volleyball program after producing an 8-22 record in his first season. After joining the Bronco family on June 30, 2009, he started his tenure with a 0-11 record, turning his team around to an 8-11 team through the remainder of the 2009 season. He guided the team to a 7-9 Western Athletic Conference record, earning the most WAC wins ever by the Broncos and the most conference wins for Boise State since 1998. Not only did he guide his team to a successful turnaround, but he helped them into the WAC tournament where they entered as the No. 6 seed and defeated No. 3-seeded Idaho to advance to the WAC semi-finals for the first time in school history. In his first season at Boise State, Garus coached Liz Harden to the first WAC All-Freshman Team honor in school history. Along with Harden he had three student-athletes named to the All-WAC Second Team totaling the most All-WAC honorees in a season for Boise State.

Garus holds a strong coaching background, coaching prior to Boise State as head coach at the University of North Carolina - Greensboro for four seasons (2005-08).  There he recorded three straight winning seasons with 20 or more victories while also leading his team to the Southern Conference (SoCon) finals twice.  The 2008 season was his most successful, turning in a 23-10 record while also producing a 20-15 record in 2007 and a 23-13 record in 2006.  He turned UNCG from a team which was 0-16 in conference play in 2004 to a team that was 14-4 in 2008. He also produced five SoCon All-Conference players and 13 SoCon All-Academic honorees in his four-year tenure.

Prior to UNCG, Garus served as the top assistant coach at the University of San Francisco during the 2003 and 2004 seasons helping the team to a 35-27 record. In 2003 the Dons went 23-8 and Garus helped lead the team to their first ever NCAA tournament appearance and acquire their first ever national ranking (No. 24).

Garus also spent time with the Texas Tech University coaching staff in 2002 as an assistant helping the Red Raiders to a 14-14 record.

His first collegiate head coaching experience came from 1998 to 2002 when he directed the program at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. During his time in Colorado Springs he led his team to their best school record of 22-9 in 2001 and first ever post-season appearance, as well as a regional ranking of No. 6. Not only did Garus serve as the head coach, but also as the university's compliance coordinator and transportation coordinator for 14 sports programs.

During his time in Colorado Garus held a handful of club and volunteer assistant coaching positions including the head coach of Pikes Peak Volleyball Club (1999-2000) and a two-time volunteer assistant at the Olympic Training Center (1998-1999). He also held the Colorado - Colorado Springs assistant coach position in 1998.

The Glendale, Calif. native is a 1995 graduate of California State University San Bernardino where he played four years on the Coyotes' men's club volleyball team (1991-94). He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration with a marketing specialization.

Continuing his playing career after college, Garus played in several AVP (Association of Volleyball Professionals) Tour events from 1994-2003. He was the top-ranked player in Colorado from 1999-2001 and had a career-best 13th-place finish at the 2001 AVP Michigan Open.

Garus is married to the former Cindy Bench and they have two children, Emily and Trevor.
