SALT LAKE CITY – The Boise State track and field program picked up five wins Friday (April 12) at the Utah Spring Classic at the McCarthy Family Track and Field. The Bronco men earned four titles, while the women earned one in a meet with only select events.
Daveon Collins and Luke Schafer led the Broncos, each earning spots on Boise State’s all-time top-three list. Collins won the 100-meter dash in a career-best 10.48-second time, while tying the third-fastest time in school history (Andre Summers, 2004). Schafer soared to a second-place finish after clearing a career-best height of 16’-6.75” (5.05m) in the pole vault. Schafer knocks Brad Abbott out of the No. 3 all-time spot (16’-6”; 1993).
Justin Malnes earned a third win for the Broncos, racing to a 14.50-second time in the 110-meter hurdles, while Jordin Andrade added a win in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.64-seconds.
Boise State rounded out the day’s wins earning the men’s and women’s 4x100-meter relay titles, clocking times of 41.06-seconds and 46.18-seconds, respectively.
In addition Bryce Bergevin added a second-place finish in the 800-meters, running 1:53.19, while the Bronco women collected three runner-up titles and three third-place finishes.
Shannon Jacobs ran a career-best of 12.11-seconds to place second in the 100-meters, while Tajanee Simmons was second in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.95-seconds. Destiny Gammage earned the 200-meter dash runner-up title in 24.40-seconds, while Heather Pilcher placed third in a career-best time of 24.53-seconds.
Kimberly Miller recorded an outdoor personal best mark of 18’8” (5.69m) in the long jump and Alyssa Osai threw 173’-3” (52.82m) in the hammer, both placing third and rounding out the Broncos’ top-three finishers.
Other Bronco women in the top-eight finishers include: Yvonne Bennett – 200m (6th, 25.02); Jessica Bottleberghe – 800m (8th, 2:15.58, season best); Hayley Gregoire – 5000m (4th, 19:16.82); Shannon Jacobs – Long Jump (4th, 18-3.75/5.58m); Alexis Keyes – Long Jump (8th, 17-8.25/5.39m, career best); Heather Pilcher – Long Jump (7th, 17-11.50/5.47m); and Kady Stafford – Hammer (6th, 158-10/48.41m).
Other Bronco men in the top-eight finishers include: Jeremy Malnes – 110m hurdles (6th, 15.64); Andy Robertson – 800m (7th, 1:55.86); Adam Ruggiero – 110m hurdles (7th, 16.05, career best) and Long Jump (6th, 21-10.75/6.67m, career best); and Nick Tatro – 800m (4th, 1:53.19).
The Broncos continue competition Saturday at the 2013 Wildcat Invitational hosted by Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. The Wildcat Invitational will host many of the events that were not contested at the Utah Spring Classic, with the two serving as sister meets.
