New Mountain West 5000m record-holder, Emma Bates

WALNUT, Calif. - Emma Bates set a Mountain West record on Friday in the 5,000m at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. Bates ran a 15:33.42, edging out the previous record set by New Mexico’s Sarah Waldron in Palo Alto, Calif. in 2012 (15:37.49). Bates blew out her own school record that she set last year by more than 25 seconds. She placed fifth in the elite invitational race that was made up of mostly professional runners.
Marisa Howard took seventh place in the 3,000m steeplechase elite invitational with a time of 10:07.17. Howard was the top-collegiate finisher in a race that was similar to Bates’ in that the majority was professional runners. Her time was just shy of the school record that she set last year (10:01.12).
EUGENE, Ore. - The Broncos were led by Allison Jeffries and her first-place finish in the pole vault. With her jump of 12-9.50 (3.9m), Jeffries now holds the school records for both the outdoor and indoor pole vault.
In the hammer throw, Hayli Bozarth and Karyna Armstrong teamed up to take second and third place, respectively, with throws of 193-5 (58.90m) and 182-5 (55.61m). On the men’s side, Matt Post took third place with a 195-2 (59.49m).
Bozarth sewed up her second top-three finish of the day by claiming third place in the shot put (47-8 / 14.53m).
Kimberly Miller took third in the long jump after she leapt 18-6 (5.64m). Brandi Williams finished close behind with a fifth-place finish (17-10.75 / 5.64m). Dominique Drayden represented the men and recorded a third-place finish (22-9.25 / 6.94m).
The women’s 5,000m B race saw three Broncos snag top-five finishes. Shannon Susbauer finished second (17:25.76), Shelby McIntyre took fourth (17:42.33) and Hayley Gregoire placed fifth (17:43.67). In the men’s 5,000m B race, Kyle Merritt finished in second place with a 14:25.54.
Boise State enters its final day of competition tomorrow at the Oregon Relays when the men’s 4X100 relay team hits the track at 5:20 p.m. (PT).
