BOISE, Idaho – Boise State senior Alyssa Osai led the Broncos to four event titles in the first day of competition at the Idaho-Utah Border Clash at Dona Larsen Park, Friday. The meet is the final home competition of the 2013 season.
Osai had a career-best day breaking a 21-year old school record. The San Carlos, Calif., native threw a mark of 159’-3” (48.53m) to win the discus title, surpassing Gloria Dillard’s former record of 158’-6” set in 1992. Her throw was a 13’-4” improvement on her own career-best.
Lauran Lucas earned a second win for the Bronco women, claiming the 1500-meter title in a facility record time of 4:37.03. Marissa Opatz snuck into a top-three finish in the event, placing third in 4:46.21.
Austin Hamilton and Luke Schafer earned wins for the Bronco men, claiming titles in the javelin and pole vault, respectively. Hamilton had a career-best throw of 209’-5” (63.84m) to win the event by nearly seven-feet.
Schafer cleared a near-best and facility record of 16’-4.75” (5.00m) to win the pole vault, while teammate Nathan Serrano placed third with a career-best of 14’-5.25” (4.40m).
Bronco women Kimberly Miller and Heather Pilcher earned top-three finishes in the long jump, placing second and third, respectively. Miller earned a mark of 18’-6” (5.64m), while Pilcher jumped 18’-5.75” (5.63m).
Adam Ruggiero was the final Bronco with a top-three spot Friday, sitting in third after day one of the men’s decathlon. Ruggiero placed third in the 100-meters, 400-meters, high jump and long jump, while also placing fourth in the shot put in his first of 10 events. He finishes the first day of competition with a total of 3,245-points.
Other Bronco women finishing in the top-eight include: Jenna Carlson, 1500m (7th); Shannon Jacobs, Long Jump (4th); Lauran Johnson, Long Jump (5th); Alexis Keyes, Long Jump (6th); Shelby McIntyre, 1500m (6th); Lacie Rasley, Shot Put (6th); Cara Strodel, 1500m (4th); and Danielle Zehrung, 1500m (8th).
Other Bronco men finishing in the top-eight include: Bryce Bergevin, 1500m (8th); Kyle Brush, 1500m (6th); Wyatt Diderickson, 1500m (4th).
Day two of the Idaho-Utah Border Clash begins with the decathlon 110-meter hurdles at 9:30 a.m. Additional field events begin with the women’s hammer throw at 10 a.m., while running events begin with the women’s 5000-meters at 10:30 a.m. at the Ed Jacoby Track at Dona Larsen Park.
