Bates Qualifies for NCAA Championships in 10000-meters

AUSTIN, Texas – Seven Broncos took to the stage Thursday (May 23) in the first day of the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Championship at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.

Redshirt sophomore Emma Bates punched her ticket to her third NCAA National Championships Thursday evening, placing fifth in the 10000-meter semifinal. The Elk River, Minn., native had an outstanding finish to launch her to a top-12 qualifying spot with a time of 35:01.18. A two-time All-America honoree in the 5000-meters, Bates will take to the track Saturday evening to try her luck at qualifying in two events, racing in the 5000-meter semifinal.

Junior Jordin Andrade kicked-off the running events for the Broncos, winning the first heat of six in the men’s 400-meter hurdles. Andrade clocked a time of 51.18-seconds to place sixth in the first round (48 competitors), earning an automatic qualifying spot in the quarterfinals Friday evening.

Sophomore Bret Scheve placed fifth in the same heat as Andrade but had to wait until all six heats were contested before learning he earned a 24th-place finish and the final qualifying spot to the quarterfinals. Scheve ran a time of 52.22-seconds, a lifetime best.

Junior Daveon Collins earned the final advancing spot by a Bronco Thursday evening, placing second in his heat of the 100-meter dash first round. Collins’ time of 10.38-seconds was just off his lifetime best, earning him an 11th-place finish in the 48-man field and advancing him to the quarterfinal round Friday. Collins will also compete in the 200-meter first round and 4x400-meter relay quarterfinals this weekend.

Mackenzie Flannigan raced in the women’s 100-meter dash first round, placing fifth in her heat and 36th overall. The junior, who clocked a time of 11.81-seconds, will not advance but will compete in the 200-meter first round and 4x100-meter relay quarterfinals this weekend.

Also on the track was Rici Morrill who ran a time of 4:29.55 to place sixth in her heat and 31st overall in the women’s 1500-meter first round. Drew O’donoghue-McDonald raced to an 11th-place finish in his heat and 39th overall spot in the men’s 1500-meters in 3:56.11. The pair’s season ends after Thursday’s races.

In the field events redshirt senior Alyssa Osai closed out her career with a 39th-place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 175’-10” (53.60m).  Fellow senior Heather Pilcher long jumped to a 45th-place finish with a mark of 17’-11” (5.46m). Pilcher will compete Saturday in the 4x100-meter relay quarterfinals.

Friday will be the second of three days in the championship meet. Collins will race in the quarterfinals of the 100-meter dash, as well as the 200-meter first round. Andrade and Scheve will race in the quarterfinals of the 400-meter hurdles, while Flannigan will be joined by Taryn Campos in the women’s 200-meter first round. Justin Malnes will race in the first round of the 110-meter hurdles, while Marisa VanderMalle and Zach Wiles will race in the women’s and men’s 3000-meter steeplechase quarterfinals. Matt Post will be the first Bronco to compete Friday, throwing in the first round of the hammer throw at 1 p.m. (MT).
