AUSTIN, Texas – Boise State’s Marisa VanderMalle became the second Bronco to earn a national qualifying spot Friday (May 24) at the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round at Texas’ Mike A. Myers Stadium. VanderMalle shattered her own school record by 24-seconds in the 3000-meter steeplechase to earn the 10th spot in the quarterfinal round Friday evening.
The sophomore, whose former school record was 10:25.24, clocked a time of 10:01.12 to place third in her heat. VanderMalle raced late into the evening Friday after thunderstorms and lightning delayed the West Preliminary meet approximately three and a half hours.
Junior Daveon Collins raced for in his second day of competition earning a qualifying spot to the quarterfinals in the 200-meter first round. Collins clocked a time of 20.61-seconds to place second in his heat, while also placing seventh overall. He raced in the quarterfinals of the 100-meter dash earlier in the day, clocking 10.64-seconds to place 16th, just missing the top-12 which advances to the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Junior Jordin Andrade had a narrow miss at a qualifying spot as well, placing 14th in the 400-meter hurdle quarterfinals. Andrade clocked a time of 50.75-seconds to place fourth in his heat and miss a qualifying spot to Eugene by two places. Fellow Bronco Bret Scheve also raced in the intermediate hurdles, placing seventh in the same heat and 22nd overall in a time of 52.87-seconds.
Justin Malnes raced in the first round of the 110-meter hurdles, Friday, placing 29th overall, missing a qualifying spot by five places. The junior clocked a time of 14.43-seconds to place fifth in his heat.
On the women’s side junior Mackenzie Flannigan and senior Taryn Campos raced in the first round of the 200-meter dash, placing 24th and 44th, respectively. Flannigan earned the final qualifying spot to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals in a time of 24.03-seconds, good for fifth-place in her heat. Campos clocked a time of 24.89-seconds to place seventh in her heat.
Six individuals and two relays will compete for Boise State in the final day of the NCAA West Preliminary, Saturday. Matt Post, who was originally scheduled to compete Friday afternoon, will now compete Saturday morning at 10 a.m. (CT) after the men’s hammer throw was delayed and rescheduled due to lightning and storms Friday.
Austin Hamilton will join him in the throws, competing in the javelin, while Collins and Flannigan will each compete in their respective 200-meter quarterfinals. Emma Bates, who earned an NCAA National Championship qualifying spot in the 10000-meters Thursday evening, and Tessa Murray will compete in the 5000-meters, as well as David Elliott on the men’s side.
Boise State’s women will race in the 4x100-meter quarterfinals, while the men’s 4x400-meter relay will also compete Saturday.
