Four Boise State track and field athletes have earned qualifying spots in the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championship, June 5-8, at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Emma Bates advances to her third NCAA national meet (two outdoor, one indoor), while Daveon Collins, Matt Post and Marisa VanderMalle will compete in their first national meet.
Bates, a two-time second team All-America honoree in the 5000-meters (once indoors, once outdoors), will compete in two events for the first time at a national championship, racing in the 5000-meters and 10000-meters. Collins will compete in the 200-meters, Post in the hammer, and VanderMalle in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
To qualify for the championship, Bates and VanderMalle ran school records while placing fourth and 10th in the 5000-meters and steeplechase, respectively, at the NCAA West Preliminary Round. Bates also placed fifth in the 10000-meters. Collins, who holds the school record in the 200-meters, and Post each placed 10th in their respective events, sitting inside the top-12 qualifying spots that advance to the final championships.
The most team members Boise State has ever qualified to the NCAA championship meet was nine in 2007, there were seven qualifiers in 2008.
Athletes who qualified to the final championships competition did so through performances in the East and West preliminary championships competition. Twelve competitors from each individual event and 12 teams from each relay event advance from each preliminary championships competition site to the final championships in Eugene, Ore. Therefore, 24 competitors join (12 from each preliminary) in Eugene, Ore., to compete in the final championships. Semifinal and final rounds will be contested at the championship meet in Eugene.
The heptathlon and decathlon events were not contested at the preliminary championships competition. Qualification to the championships in these two events is accomplished through a competitor's position on the national descending order list. The top 24 declared student-athletes in each of these two events will be accepted into the national championships.
Live results of the competition are available.
