Broncos Fall to Northwestern in Opener

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State men's tennis opened the season Sunday afternoon with a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the Northwestern Wildcats (1-1) at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club. The doubles point was a battle between the two programs with Northwestern claiming the point and momentum on a tiebreaker victory at No. 3 doubles.

After Northwestern had taken No. 1 doubles and the early lead, Boise State's Stefan Lalovic and Pedro Platzeck brought the Broncos even when they defeated the Wildcats No. 2 tandem of Nick Brookes and Antonioni Fasano 6-3.

That setup the exciting finish on court three where Boise State's Wyatt DeMulling and Ryland McDermott rallied from 3-1 down to force it into a tiebreaker at 6-6. The Wildcats duo of Chris Ephron and Michael Lorenzini jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the tiebreaker only to see the Broncos rally back to within 5-4. The match eventually went against the Boise State combo as the Wildcats claimed the tiebreaker 7-5 to clinch the team doubles point for the visitors 7-6 (5).

Singles went to Northwestern 4-0 as the Wildcats claimed wins on courts three, two, four and six, respectively. Matteo Tinelli debuting in his first dual match as a Bronco played at No. 1 singles. The freshman was in a tight contest dropping set one 7-5 to Fasano and just beginning set two when the match was called after Northwestern clinched the team victory.

The first singles match completed came on court three where Boise State newcomer Wyatt DeMulling debuted with a two-set defeat by the Wildcats' Ben Vandixhorn 6-0, 6-3 to make the score 2-0 Northwestern.

That was followed by court two where Jack Heslin fell 7-5, 6-0. The final two contests completed finished within moments of each other starting with court four where Platzeck went down 6-2, 6-2, followed shortly by No. 6 singles where McDermott was defeated 6-1, 6-2.

Boise State will return to action Monday morning when the Broncos host No. 17 Michigan at 11:30 a.m. at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club in Boise.
