Broncos Fall to No. 20 Arizona State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Boise State men’s tennis fell 4-0 to 20th-ranked Arizona State to open the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic at Montgomery, Ala., Friday afternoon.

Boise State’s junior tandem of Kyle Butters and Jack Heslin recorded the lone victory for the Broncos winning 6-1 at No. 1 doubles over ASU’s Michael Geerts and Thomas Wright. Unfortunately, Boise State lost the doubles point 2-1 to the Sun Devils who won on courts two and three.

Arizona State then took three straight singles matches to claim the victory. Heslin fell in two sets at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1 to ASU’s Geerts. The next Bronco to fall was freshman Mattia Bedolo who lost to Makey Rakotomalala 6-3, 6-2 on court three. The clincher was at No. 2 singles where the Sun Devils’ Ben Hannestad downed Boise State freshman Matteo Tinelli 6-3, 6-4.

Boise State’s Maximilien Blancaneaux was leading his contest on court six where he was up 7-6, 0-0 over Thomas Wright when the match was abandoned with the clinching of the team victory.

Wyatt DeMulling was attempting to rally from one set down and was leading the second 6-2, 4-5 when his match was stopped.

Boise State will face Auburn in the consolation semifinals Saturday. The Tigers lost 4-3 to Fresno State who is led by Boise State alum Luke Shields who is the Bulldogs’ head coach.
