March 1, 2018

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — It was an afternoon of rallies as Boise State came back twice to defeat the UC Davis Aggies 4-3 Thursday afternoon at the San Diego Tennis Club in San Diego, Calif. After Boise State rallied from 2-0 down to tie the match at 2-2, the Broncos were forced to rally a second time after UCD regained the lead up 3-2.

“I’m really proud of the way the guys have persevered this year, it’s been hard.” said Patton. “But it paid off today as our guys did not give up and fought back for this big win. We were down 2-1 with our backs to the wall having to win three of the final four matches. We pulled it out winning with the three matches we needed and with all of them going to three sets. I am so proud of this team and the way they played today.”

It was not easy for the Broncos who were forced to win three of the final four singles matches to claim the victory. In the end Boise State persevered behind big wins by Wyatt DeMulling, Matteo Tinelli and Pedro Platzeck.

Trailing 2-0 after the Aggies claimed the doubles point and the first singles victory on court one, Boise State began to battle back. Kyle Butters closed the deficit to 2-1 when he took No. 4 singles in straight sets over Tommy Lam 6-2, 6-4.

Next, DeMulling rallied from dropping his opening set to force the match into a decisive third where he claimed the win. The junior from Seattle, Wash., came back to put away UCD’s Mitchell Iwahiro 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 to tie the team score at 2-2.

The Aggies regained the lead at 3-2 with a win at No. 3 singles where UC Davis’ David Goulak rallied to defeat the Broncos’ Mattia Bedolo in three 5-7, 7-5, 6-0.

That setup the final two must-win matches for Boise State on courts two and six. The first came from freshman Matteo Tinelli at No. 2 singles. After winning set one, the native of Milan, Italy, was forced to hold off Everett Maltby who pushed the match to three sets before Tinelli put it away 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-2 to tie the team score at three all.

The team victory came down to court six where the Broncos’ Platzeck and UCD’s Arjith Jayaraman where playing in their third set. Platzeck fell behind early against Jayaraman falling in set one, then came back to take set two to force it to three. The native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, came through for Boise State clinching the match for the blue and orange with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory.

The match began with UC Davis taking the doubles point. The Aggie tandem of Jonathan Star and Chethan Swanson got the first doubles match win of two after defeating Boise State’s Ryland McDermott and Matteo Tinelli, 6-3.

The Broncos responded with a win at the No. 2 position where Platzeck and Stefan Lalovic downed David Goulak and Tommy Lam 6-3.

UC Davis’ Ivan Thamma and Everett Maltby eventually sealed the doubles point by defeating Kyle Butters and Jack Heslin 6-4.

Boise State will now turn its attention towards the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club which started Thursday night with an exhibition match featuring the Broncos Tim Heslin and volunteer assistant coach Stefan Menichella, the rest of the team will start Friday morning.
