Romero Finishes Runner-up at Cowboy Open
Nov. 5, 2016
LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Redshirt freshman Demetrius Romero led the Boise State wrestling team at the season-opening Cowboy Open at War Memorial Fieldhouse Saturday, finishing runner-up at 165 pounds. Redshirt senior Austin Dewey (174) and redshirt freshman Fred Green (157) each reached the third-place matches in their respective weight classes.
Romero picked up three-straight victories to advance to the title bout, but ultimately dropped the championship match in overtime, falling 4-2 (TB1). Romero opened with a major decision (10-2), then moved on to the championship semifinals following a medical forfeit. His 3-2 decision over Air Force's Ricky Padilla earned him a spot in the finals in his Bronco debut.
Dewey picked up a pair of wins before suffering his first and only loss of the tournament in the semifinals. He pinned Northern Colorado's Thomas Chisholm in the opening round (5:29), then picked up an 11-4 decision before dropping a decision (3-2) to second-place finisher Kimball Bastian of Utah Valley. In the consolation bracket, Dewey picked up another fall, this time in 2:22, then won his third-place match 6-4 (SV) over Air Force's Michael Billingsley.
Green also advanced to the third-place match, but fell via major decision (10-2). Green won back-to-back decisions before getting pinned in the semifinals (3:00). He responded with a pin of his own over Utah Valley's Raider Lofthouse in the consolation semifinals before forfeiting the third-place match.
As 125 pounds, junior transfer Will Bardezbain dropped his opening-round match to Air Force's Drew Romero, but then recorded a technical fall and back-to-back decisions in the wrestle-back to reach the consolation semifinals. Unfortunately for Bardezbain, he once again ran into Romero, and fell via decision, 15-13.
Jake Velarde faced a similar fate as Bardezbain at 149. Unable to get by Benjamin Polkowske (Northern Colorado) in the opening round, he then notched a pair of wins before running back into Polkowske and falling in the consolation semifinals. Dakota Wall picked up a pair of wins, both by decision, before dropping consecutive decisions. He, too, advanced to the consolation semifinals before being ousted from the tournament.
