BOISE STATE TENURE (2002-present)Heather Sower (pronounced SO-wer) enters her 15th season as an assistant at Boise State University, her alma mater. She is now in her 22nd season as a collegiate coach. Sower is primarily responsible for the internal operations of the program and opponent scheduling. She is also heavily involved in practice sessions, conditioning and serves as the position coach for post players.
As a member of the Boise State coaching staff she has helped guide the program to seven winning seasons, three 20-plus winning campaigns, two regular-season championships, two conference tournament titles and four postseason tournament berths, the 2007 NCAA, 2008 WNIT, 2014 WBI and 2015 NCAA. During her tenure the team has set school records for scoring and rebounding three times each, as well as recording the top-five rebounding marks all-time in the program’s history.
At Boise State, Sower has coached one player who earned both WBCA All-Region and honorable mention All-American honors, eight individuals who garnered a combined 10 postseason all-conference honors, one honorable mention all-conference, three conference newcomers of the year, two conference freshman of the year, three conference all-defensive team members, five players for a combined six conference all-tournament team honors including two MVPs, 11 who made conference all-freshmen teams, 35 Broncos that received a total of 80 academic all-conference honors and four individuals who garnered CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition.
PRIOR TO BOISE STATESower spent seven years coaching in the NAIA and NCAA Division II ranks with the College of Idaho and Regis University (Colo.), respectively.
Prior to Sower’s arrival at Boise State she spent the 2001-02 season as an assistant coach at Regis. Sower helped guide the Rangers to their most successful campaign in program history as they finished with a 21-8 overall record and advanced to their first NCAA Division II Tournament in 2002.
Sower began her coaching career as an assistant under Todd Corman at the College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho, when the school reinstated the women’s basketball program for the 1995-96 season. She spent six seasons (1995-96 to 2000-01) with the Coyotes, helping guide the program to a top-10 national ranking and to the 2000 NAIA National Tournament Elite Eight, as well as, a runner-up finish at the 2001 NAIA National Tournament. While she was at the College of Idaho, the Coyotes received three NAIA National Tournament bids in six years and accumulated an overall record of 123-60.
COACHING ACCOMPLISHMENTSIn the previous 21 years as a collegiate coach her teams have recorded 14 winning seasons and one that finished with a .500 mark. Her coaching accomplishments include working with one player who earned both WBCA All-Region and honorable mention All-American honors, 15 players who combined for 21 all-conference honors, three who earned all-defensive team recognition, two freshmen of the year, three newcomers of the year, 11 all-freshmen team honors and six players who made conference all-tournament teams with two MVPs. In addition, 40 individuals earned a combined total of 91 academic all-conference honors, while four have been named CoSIDA Academic All-District.
BOISE STATE PLAYING CAREERSower played four years of women’s basketball at Boise State, earning All-Big Sky Conference honors as a senior. She was also named to the 1994 Big Sky All-Academic Team. Sower, who served as a captain, won team awards for best defense and hustle in her final season as a Bronco. Sower helped lead Boise State to a top-20 ranking and an appearance in the 1994 NCAA Tournament her senior year. Boise State captured the Big Sky Conference regular-season crown during Sower’s sophomore and senior campaigns.
PERSONALSower is a native of Spokane, Wash., where she attended Mead High School. She graduated from Boise State in 1995 with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology.
