Lenhardt Scores 33 as Boise State Rally Falls Short
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Lauren Lenhardt scored 33 points to lead a Boise State rally attempt that came up short in a 77-72 loss at Air Force in a Mountain West Conference game Wednesday night in Colorado Springs, Colo. With Boise State limited to eight players the Falcons tried to run the Broncos out of the game by pressing nearly the entire contest. However, Boise State hung in there until the end rallying from 15 points down behind Lenhardt's scoring. The senior recorded 17 points of her season-high points total in the final nine minutes to help pull the Broncos to within two points with under three minutes to play. Unfortunately, the rally came up short as Air Force held on for the win. The loss drops Boise State to 10-14 overall and 3-8 in league play.
Lenhardt scored 20 of her 33 points in the final period as she shot 12-of-22 from the floor with one 3-pointer, as well as going eight-for-nine from the free throw line. The senior from Eagle, Idaho, also had five rebounds in the contest to move from 14th to 12th in career rebounding at Boise State with 595 overall.
Rosalie Cutri starting her third straight game at the point finished with 13 points, 10 in the second period. She also had five rebounds with a career-high seven assists and career-best six steals. Brandi Henton was the third Bronco in double-figure scoring with 11. Lexie Der recorded eight points and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.
The Broncos shot 43.1 percent (25-58) from the floor, 18.2 percent (2-11) from beyond the arc and 69 percent (20-29) from the free-throw line. Air Force finished shooting 45.6 percent (26-57), 44.4 percent (4-9) from 3-point range and a season-best 100 percent (21-21) from the charity stripe.
Free throw shooting proved to be a big difference in the game as Air Force entered the game as the eighth best in the MW from the charity stripe shooting 61.6 percent on the year, but did not miss tonight. Three Falcons had double-digit points led by Jimi Blagowski with 19 followed by Alicia Leipprandt with 17 and Dymond James with 16.
The first half was sloppy as the two teams combined for 25 turnovers in the frame. There were five lead changes early on with the Broncos largest lead being four points twice, the last was 13-9 with 12 minutes to go.
Air Force responded with a 17-2 run to take a 26-15 lead at the 7:34 mark in the period. However, Lenhardt led a Boise State rally that cut the deficit to four points, 31-27, by scoring eight points in the final seven minutes of the first half. The Falcons closed the period with a seven-point 37-30 lead at the break.
The Falcons opened the second half stretching their advantage out to 14 where they maintained it for most of the period. Air Force took a game-high 15 point lead on a Leipprandt three-point play with 9:20 remaining.
Boise State began its rally shortly afterwards led by 17 Lenhardt points as the Broncos closed to within two points twice with the chance to tie the game with 2:41 to go but missed a pair of free throws. They closed once more to within two when Lenhardt hit a short jumper with 2:07 left to make it 67-65, but the Broncos could get no closer as the Falcons finished the game out at the free throw line going eight-for-eight in the final two minutes.
