WHAT'S HAPPENING

  • The Game: Boise State (25-7) will open its fourth NCAA Championship appearance on the road in Los Angeles, Calif., at No. 15/14 UCLA (23-8) on Saturday at Pauley Pavilion, tip is schedule for 4:30 p.m. (Mountain). 

  • Next Up: If the Broncos win on Saturday versus the Bruins, they will meet the winner of the Texas A&M (21-11) versus Penn (22-7) contest on Monday night in Los Angeles. 


GAME PREVIEW

  • The Broncos enter Saturday's NCAA First Round game on a 10-game win streak and are 25-7 overall after finishing league play at 12-6 to tie for third place.

  • Boise State (4th seed) is coming off the MW Tournament Championship recording wins over No. 5 seed New Mexico 64-62, No. 1 Colorado State 65-61 and No. 7 Fresno State 66-53 in title game. 

  • Brooke Pahukoa leads Boise State on the year averaging 13.6 points per game (10th MW) ... Shalen Shaw adds 10.3 points (19th MW) and team-high 7.2 rebounds (11th MW) per game ... Marijke Vanderschaaf chips in 10.2 points (20th MW) and 6.4 rebounds (15th MW) per game.

  • On the year, Boise State is second in the Mountain West for scoring offense averaging 69.1 points per game while shooting 40.2 percent (4th MW) from the floor and 33.2 percent (3rd MW) from behind the arc ... the Broncos allow 61.8 points per game (6th MW). 

  • UCLA enters the game at 23-8 overall and is ranked 15th by the Associated Press and 14th in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

  • The Bruins reached the Pac-12 semifinals with a 77-68 victory over Arizona State before falling 63-53 to Oregon State in the semis.

  • On the year, Jordin Canada leads the Bruins averaging 18.0 points (3rd Pac-12), 5.3 rebounds (18th Pac-12) and 6.6 assists (1st Pac-12) per game ... Monique Billings adds 16.8 points (5th Pac-12) and 10.7 rebounds (2nd Pac-12) per game. 

  • The Bruins are averaging 73.9 points per game (2nd Pac-12) this season, while allowing 64.0 ppg (5th Pac-12) ... they shoot 40.5 percent (9th Pac-12) from the floor as a team and 29.2 percent (10th Pac-12) from beyond the arc. 

  • This will be the third meeting in the series with the Broncos leading 2-0.

  • Boise State won 66-64 on Dec. 19, 1993 in LA, then followed with a 61-45 victory in Boise on Dec. 3, 1994.

  • Trivia Note: Current Bronco assistant coach Heather Sower was on both teams that defeated the Bruins and her coach was current Washington State head coach June Daugherty.

TEAM NOTES

  • Boise State is now 25-7 overall and has clinched its fourth-consecutive winning season and seventh 20-win campaign in program history.

  • The Broncos are 14-2 at home in Taco Bell Arena and 11-5 on the road.

  • This is Boise State's fourth appearance in the NCAA Championship and second in three years ... previous trips were in 1994, 2007 and 2015. 

  • Last time Boise State lost at Tennessee 72-61 in the first round ... the Broncos are 0-3 in NCAA Tournament games.

  • Three of the four NCAA Tournament appearances have come under head coach Gordy Presnell (2007, 2015, 2017).

  • This is the Broncos third postseason appearance in the last four years, WBI in 2014.

  • This is the eighth postseason appearance for Boise State all-time: NCAA (4), WNIT (2), WBI (1) and AIAW (1).

  • During the current 10-game win streak the Broncos have rallied five times for the win after trailing entering the four quarter ... the Broncos trailed against both New Mexico and Colorado State at the MW Championship.

  • Boise State started the season out on an eight-game win streak, they currently have an active 10-game win streak going at the end of the campaign.

  • Season of first, prior to this year Boise State had not won a game at Colorado State since joining the league in 2011-12 or at Wyoming in program history, in addition, it had not won at Fresno State during the coach Presnell era (12 years) ... they won at all three locations this season ... the win at CSU snapped a 22-game home win streak for the Rams. 

  • Boise State is 20-1 this year when leading after three quarters ... 37-3 since the quarter format was adopted for the 2015-16 season.

  • The Broncos are 19-0 this year when leading with five minutes to play in the game ... 92-4 (all games) since Boise State joined the MW for 2011-12 campaign. 

  • On the year, Boise State has used a balanced offensive attack and has had three or more players reach double-figure scoring in 22 of 32 games ... they are 20-2 in those 22 contests.

  • The balanced attack includes 10 players having scored double-digit points this season, eight have led the team in scoring at least once ... no one has led the team in scoring more than 11 times (Brooke Pahukoa).

  • The Broncos currently have three players averaging double-digit points led by Brooke Pahukoa (13.6 ppg) followed by Shalen Shaw (10.3 ppg) and Marijke Vanderschaaf (10.2 ppg) ... six players average 7.4 or more points per game.

  • Six Broncos have reached double-digit points at least nine times each this season and a total of seven have had four or more with a high of 19 by Brooke Pahukoa.

  • Boise State is third in the MW for 3-point percentage as a team at .332 ... they have made 230 3-pointers this season and average 7.2 per game.

  • Defensively, Boise State ranks second in the MW and 21st nationally in 3-point defense holding opponents to 27.9 percent from beyond the arc.

  • Winter Chill, Boise State shot 38.8 percent from 3-point range in nonconference play to lead the MW and rank 17th nationally ... since Christmas and during the 18-game MW schedule the Broncos struggled shooting a chilly 28.1 percent to rank ninth in the MW (conference games). 

  • However, the Broncos have thawed out some lately over the last 10 games making 57-of-170 attempts (.335) from the arc for a 5.7 average.


INDIVIDUAL NOTES
Gordy Presnell

  • Head coach Gordy Presnell hit the 600 career wins milestone against Portland (Dec. 18), Presnell is the 32nd coach in NCAA DI history to hit the mark ... he now has 616 wins. 

  • This is the third time he has taken Boise State to the NCAA and the fifth postseason appearance overall.


Brooke Pahukoa

  • During the current 10-game win streak Brooke Pahukoa is leading the team in scoring at 13.9 points per game ... with seven games in double-digit scoring, three with 20-plus.

  • Brooke Pahukoa leads the team and ranks 10th in the MW for points per game at 13.6 ... she has 19 games in double-digit points, nine with 20-plus, including 21 at New Mexico (Jan. 18), 23 versus San Jose State (Jan. 21), 21 at Fresno State (Feb. 28), 23 versus Air Force (March 3) and 25 vs New Mexico (March 7).

  • Brooke Pahukoa has moved into eighth all-time (1,339) for career points at Boise State, 19 (1,358) short of tying for seventh.

  • Pahukoa was named the MW Championship MVP last week becoming only the second person in MW history to earn the award two or more times ... she scored 57 points and average 17.7 points per game, shot 40.4 percent (19-47) from floor, 41.7 percent (5-12) from the arc and 90.9 percent (10-11) from the free-throw line.

  • Pahukoa is a two-time All-Mountain West selection (2016 and 2017).

  • Pahukoa is the career leader in free-throw percentage at Boise State shooting 83 percent in four years.


Marijke Vanderschaaf

  • During the 10-game win streak Marijke Vanderschaaf has added 10.9 points and 6.7 rebounds per game

  • Vanderschaaf is third on team for scoring averaging 10.2 points per game (20th MW) and has scored double-figure points in 15 contests, tied for second most on team, including a career-high 26 in victory against New Mexico (Feb. 15), 22 at San Diego State (Jan. 7) and 20 in the win over Wyoming (Jan. 28). 

  • Marijke Vanderschaaf is averaging 6.5 rebounds per game (2nd on team / 15th MW) and has 19 games with six or more boards ... she had a career-high 16 in win at San Jose State (Feb. 25).


Shalen "Shay" Shaw

  • Shalen Shaw is averaging 9.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game during the 10-game win streak. 

  • Shalen Shaw is second on team and 19th in MW for scoring at 10.3 points per game ... she leads the team and is 11th in MW for rebounds at 7.2 per game. 

  • Last week at the MW Championship she recorded a combined 27 rebounds to move from 11th on the Boise State career list into seventh with 657.

  • Shaw ranks fourth among active players this year in the MW for career double-doubles with 14, two this season.

  • Shaw went down injured in the game at Nevada (Jan. 25) and missed the next three contests, the Broncos went 1-3 in that stretch (including loss at Nevada) ... the Broncos are 10-0 since her return. 

  • Shaw is only the second player in program history to have 800 points (888), 600 rebounds (657) and 200 assists (201).


Yaiza Rodriguez

  • Rodriguez is second in the MW and 24th nationally in assists per game at 5.9.

  • Rodriguez set the school's career assists record earlier this fall at 452 and has since stretched it out to 614 ... fourth in MW history.

  • She also owns the top three single season assists marks in program history with this year's 190 breaking her previous tow records: 147 in 2014-15 and 172 in 2015-16.

  • Rodriguez was named to the MW Championship All-Tournament Team for second time last week. 

  • Rodriguez needs 11 points to become the 19th member of the Bronco 1,000 career points club currently sitting at 989.
