BOISE, Idaho – Approximately 800 youth soccer players took part in the 14th Annual 7-A-Side Soccer Tournament on the Campus of Boise State University, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23-24.
The number of participants was a record for the tournament, which capped the field to 50 teams in previous seasons, but expanded to 80 in 2013. Competition spanned from the U-10 division, which was added last season, all the way to U-14 for both boys and girls.
“It was a great weekend with excellent soccer, excellent support and a good product overall,” said Boise State first year head coach Jim Thomas.
Teams traveled from all over the state of Idaho, and even a team from Elko, Nev., made the nearly 250-mile drive to play on the blue turf. Below is a photo of redshirt sophomore KT Clayton with the members of the Elko team.
The record participation excited Thomas, but he still sees room to improve and grow next year.
“We want it to be even bigger and better next year,” Thomas said. “We want to get an actual tournament format in place and get some trophies out here to give to the winners. We also want to expand to an adult division and give the older players a shot to show off their skills.”
Boise State will offer a Spring Break Bronco Academy camp for boys and girls ages 5-13, March 25-28 at the Boas Soccer Complex. Registration is currently open and can be found here, along with the necessary consent form.
