Broncos Sweep Southern Utah on Road
March 26, 2013
CEDAR CITY, Utah - Boise State softball came from behind for a 5-3 victory in its first game of a doubleheader against Southern Utah Tuesday, before staying hot in the second game and rolling to a 12-1 win in five innings. The Broncos (16-17-1) racked up 25 hits on the day, including eight for extra bases.
Lela Work had a career day at the plate, going a combined 4-for-5 with five RBI in the two games. Work's only hit of game one was a game-winning, three-run home run in the fourth inning. She followed that with a three-hit performance in the second game, driving in two more runs. It was the first multi-hit game of Work's career who is now hitting .364 with all of her 22 plate appearances coming in the last eight games.
Tara Glover logged her second four-hit game of the year in game two, collecting a single in each of the first four innings to lead a relentless Bronco attack. Glover stole two bases, scored three times, drove in one and also recorded an unassisted double play from her center field position to turn in one of the most impressive single-game individual performances by a Bronco.
Back-to-Back Home Runs Lift Broncos in Game One
The Broncos benefited from an error and a close call at first base to bring Work to the plate with two outs and two on in the top of the fourth. The senior launched her second home run of the season to right center on a 1-0 pitch, putting the Broncos up 3-2. Palmer followed with a blast to left center after fouling off three pitches. Her third home run of the year made it 4-2.
It is the second time this season the Broncos have hit back-to-back home runs. Palmer and fellow freshman Sarah Barnes left the yard in consecutive at bats Feb. 9, against Northwestern.
Work started the game in the circle for Boise State. She breezed through the first eight batters, allowing just a walk but erasing it with a double play to sit the Thunderbirds down in order through two-and-two-thirds. Southern Utah strung together three hits with two-outs in the bottom of the third, including a two-run double to break the 0-0 deadlock.
After Boise State's response, the Thunderbirds used a solo home run to cut the lead to one and chase Work from the circle with one out in the bottom of the fourth. Kenzie Cole came on in relief and made the lead stick. Cole scattered three hits and a hit batter in three-and-two-thirds innings to pick up the win and improve to 4-6 on the season.
The Broncos added a run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Devon Bridges. That scored Glover who had singled, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball earlier in the inning.
Mackenzie Whyte had two of the Broncos' seven hits. It is Whyte's fifth multi-hit game of the year.
Broncos Score Early, Often in 12-1 Romp
Glover had four singles, becoming the first Bronco with three four-hit games in her career. She was one of three Broncos to come to the plate in each of the first four innings. Bourke was 3-for-3 with a walk and three RBI in her four appearances. Bridges was 2-for-4 in her trips to the plate during a busy first four innings.
Boise State scored three runs in the first, highlighted by a two-run double from Makenna Weir. Work followed with a double of her own to score Weir and start her three hit game.
The Broncos added one in the second as Glover and Bourke produced their own two-out rally. Glover singled and stole second for the second time in as many innings. Her second steal of the game was her third on the day and 18th of the year, tying her own single-season school record. Bourke followed with a single into right to score the run.
Work picked up her second RBI with a single in the third to score Whyte who led off with a double. Work later scored in the inning to push the lead to 6-0, but the Broncos left the bases loaded to end the inning.
That did little to squelch the momentum. Weir led off the fourth with her third home run of the season and kick started a six-run inning. Bourke drove in two with a double to right for her third hit of the game. Bridges singled to right to make it 12-0 and close the scoring.
Rebecca Patton made the start in the circle for Boise State. Patton allowed a hit to the first batter of the game. A steal and a wild pitch put that runner at third, but the junior hurler did not allow Southern Utah to respond the Boise State's three-run inning.
A double in the second inning was wiped away when Glover raced in from center to make a catch just beyond second base. She came in to tag second herself and double off the base runner who was looking to score if the blooper fell in.
Patton allowed one run in the fourth inning to spoil the shutout, but worked out of the inning which turned out to be her last. She got the win to improve to 8-6, surrendering five hits over her four innings without a walk while striking out three.
Sarah Barnes pitched the fifth inning, giving up just one walk.
Lindsey Nicholson drove in two runs for the first multi-RBI game of her career. Nicholson picked up both runs on sacrifice flies, becoming the first Bronco in school history to have two sacrifice flies in the same game.
Boise State is off until April 5, while the rest of the Mountain West opens conference play this weekend. The Broncos will travel to New Mexico for its first MW series, taking on the Lobos April 5-7, in Albuquerque, N.M.
Glover enters conference play on a seven-game hitting streak. The reigning Mountain West Co-Player of the Year has hit safely in 16 of her last 18 games, with 30 hits over that stretch. In the last 15 games, she's hitting .500.
