Bronco Bats Secure 10-2 Win in Opener
May 9, 2013
BOISE, Idaho - Boise State scored 10 runs in the first three innings and pitched well with runners on base to take a 10-2 victory in five innings against Nevada Thursday, at Dona Larsen Park. The Broncos plated seven runs in the third inning to blow open a one-run game.
Makenna Weir came to the plate with the bases loaded in the third and drove a double to the wall to score three runs. Weir has been up with the bases loaded three times in the last three games, cashing in each time with nine RBI on two doubles and a grand slam. She now has 10 doubles on the year, tying the Boise State freshman record.
The third inning was far from over, though, as the first seven Broncos reached on four hits, two walks and an error. Brittany McCray's first-career triple drove in a run. Jordan Kreiger punched an RBI single up the middle as part of a two-hit day. After a fielder's choice and a fly out, a pair of two-out walks loaded the bases again for Sarah Barnes, the 12th batter of the inning. Barnes singled into center field to make it 10-2, but the inning ended on a play at the plate with the Broncos trying to tack on more.
The Wolf Pack loaded the bases in the fourth, but could not push a run across the plate and went down in order in the fifth as Boise State took the run-rule victory.
Nevada struck first with a run in the first inning on a bases-loaded, one-out single. Boise State starter Rebecca Patton proceeded to leave them loaded, striking out the next two batters. Patton worked a perfect second inning to keep the game tied.
It would not remain that way for long. After Weir drew a leadoff walk, Kreiger took first with a base on balls after a 12-pitch at bat with two outs to turn the lineup over. Tara Glover ripped a single into right to score one and when the throw went home took second. Nevada tried to gun her down at second, but the throw kicked away and Kreiger raced home from third to make it 3-1.
Patton found herself in another jam in the third after a single and a two-base error put the leadoff runner at third. With one out an infield single scored a run and with two outs a walk put two runners on base. After a wild pitch gave the Wolf Pack two runners in scoring position, another ball got away from McCray behind the plate. This time she got to it and started a rundown between third and home, eventually ending in the third out of the inning.
The Broncos took the momentum into the dugout and put up the seven-run frame. Nevada used three pitchers in the inning and Boise State forced two of them from the game before they could get an out.
Patton returned to the circle for the Broncos in the fourth but was lifted after two singles to start the frame. Lela Work entered in relief. The first batter Work faced went to lay down a sacrifice bunt and Weir crashed from third in time to twirl and throw out the lead runner at third base. A single up the middle loaded the bases with one out, but Work wiggled out of it and kept the game in run-rule territory.
The senior was back in the circle for the fifth with a chance to end the game early and wasted no time. Work needed just five pitches to retire the side in order and seal the win.
Holly Bourke played in her 215th game as a Bronco Thursday, breaking the school record. Bourke drew a walk in the first inning to extend her reached-base-safely streak to 22 games. Glover and Weir extended their hitting streaks to nine and seven games, respectively.
Weir has 13 plate appearances with the bases loaded this season and has driven in a run in nine of them. She has five hits, two walks and was hit by a pitch, leading to 15 RBI in those situations. Weir has a hit in her last four such plate appearances, including two doubles and a home run.
Boise State and Nevada will resume the series Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. (MT), at Dona Larsen Park.
