BOISE, Idaho – Boise State will open their 2018 season with a trip to Tempe, Ariz., for the Kajikawa Classic. This will mark a return trip to the desert for the Broncos, as this will be their first time returning to the Arizona State-hosted tournament since the 2016 season.

WHO: Boise State will open with games against South Dakota and Tennessee, Thursday, Feb. 8, before playing Indiana on Friday. Saturday, Feb. 10, will feature a double-header against St. Mary’s and Northwestern, before the Broncos conclude the tournament on Sunday against Stanford.

Tennessee (Feb. 8, 3 p.m. MT)
Indiana (Feb. 9, 9:15 a.m. MT)
Saint Mary’s (Feb. 10, 9 a.m. MT)
Northwestern (Feb. 10, 11:45 a.m.)

SERIES HISTORY: Boise State holds a 3-5 all-time record against the opponents they will face at the Kajikawa Classic, while they will play first-time meetings against South Dakota and Tennessee. The Broncos hold a winning record (2-1) against Saint Mary’s, and are 1-2, 1-1 and 0-1 against Indiana, Northwestern and Stanford, respectively. Boise State will be looking for retribution against all five schools they have played prior games against, as each of the previous meetings were a loss for the Broncos.

FIRST RANKED OPPONENT: Tennessee will open the 2018 season ranked No. 12 by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and No. 11 by USA Softball. This will be the first ranked opponent Boise State has played since a loss to No. 9/7 Washington on March 4, 2016. Northwestern is also currently receiving votes in the USA Softball poll.

REDEMPTION IN THE DESERT: The Broncos are seeking their first win in the state of Arizona since a 1-0 win over Indiana State (Feb. 22, 2015). The win came on the final day of the Diamond Devil Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. Since then, the Broncos have gone 0-5 in the state of Arizona.

BRONCOS PICKED SEVENTH BY MW COACHES: After two-straight years of being picked to finish last in the Mountain West preseason coaches’ poll, Boise State was picked to finish seventh in the 2018 poll, the conference announced on Monday. The Broncos received 27 points and no first-place votes.

HISTORIC REBOUND IN 2017: 2017 was a bounce back year for the Broncos. After opening her career with a 26-80 record through her first two seasons, head coach Cindy Ball led a historic turnaround of the program. Boise State saw the largest turnaround nationally in both RPI and overall record -- rising 131 spots in the RPI from 2016, as well as seeing a 19-win improvement. The Broncos reached the postseason for the first time in program history in the 2017 season. Boise State reached the Ogden Regional Final of the National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC) -- the softball version of the NIT. The Broncos ended the season with a 33-20 record. The 33 wins rank tied for second in program history with 2011 season (33-20), and is one-win shy of the program record of 34-20 (2012)

QUICK ACLIMIZATION: The Broncos will open the 2018 season on Feb.8, and in the first month of the season, Boise State will play 21 games in 31 days, while logging over 9,528 miles of travel. The Broncos will play 11 games in the first 10 days of the season.

SWITZERLAND WOULD BE PROUD: Boise State was 15-4 (.790) in neutral site games during the 2017 season. If 2018 plays out in the same manner, the Broncos will enter Mountain West play in good position. Of Boise State’s 50 games on the 2018 schedule, 23 will be played at a neutral site.

CERVANTES NAMED AN ALL-AMERICAN: Junior Rebekah Cervantes will enter the 2018 season as a preseason All-American, according to Fast Pitch News. The outlet named the shortstop to their 15-member first-team preseason All-American. Cervantes is one of two Mountain West players to enter the season on the first-team, and one of four players from mid-major conferences.
