Shawn Garus joined the Bronco family on June 30, 2009, becoming the 10th head coach in Boise State volleyball history. He currently serves in two capacities for the Boise State Athletics Department as the head coach for both of the Broncos’ volleyball programs, indoor and beach. The 2016-17 year marks Garus’ eighth season at the helm of Boise State’s volleyball (indoor) program holding a 143-106 (.542) record over his first eight seasons with the Broncos. He guided the Broncos to their first Mountain West Conference championship in 2016 and to their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance where they defeated 20th-ranked Western Kentucky before falling to ninth-ranked Stanford in the second round. His career record through 16 seasons as a collegiate head coach is now 251-226 (.526).

In addition, Garus helped usher in the newest sport to the Bronco family as head coach of the beach volleyball program which began in the spring of 2014. During the program’s first three campaigns he has led the beach team to a 13-24 record, including 5-6 in 2016.

Though Garus has played as a professional beach volleyball player, 2014 marked his first season as the head coach of a collegiate beach volleyball program. Garus has a solid background in the beach game as a member of the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) and competing off and on for 12 years (1995-2007) in the association’s Pro Beach Volleyball Tour in tournaments such as the Huntington Beach and Manhattan Beach Opens, to name a few.

“Shawn (Garus) is an amazing player and will be a huge asset to growing the beach game in Idaho,” said Jake Gibb a two-time U.S.A. Olympic beach volleyball player and member of the 2012 No. 1 ranked FIVB tour team. “What a great opportunity for all involved. Exciting times!!”

Garus helped usher in a new era as Boise State added beach volleyball for the spring 2014 season. During the Bronco’s inaugural campaign Garus’ team surpassed many of the expectations for the first-year program going 4-7 overall, including 3-2 wins over Pacific-12 Conference members Oregon and Washington in Portland, Ore. The program’s first-ever victory did not take long to get as the Broncos defeated Cal Poly 3-2 in its second match overall on April 4, 2014 at the Sacramento State Invitational. The second victory came two days later over Sacramento State also by a 3-2 score.

The second year of the program saw the Broncos go 4-11 overall recording wins over San Francisco (3-2), San Jose State (4-1), California (3-2) and Oregon (4-1). Boise State hosted its first ever home matches on April 24 at the new Boise State Sand Volleyball Complex splitting a pair of contests defeating the Oregon Ducks before falling to 10th-ranked Arizona 5-0.

In 2016 the Broncos went 5-6 overall in regular season contests and 4-0 in four exhibition matches. Boise State opened the season up winning the University of Oregon Tournament (April 3-4) at 3-0 with wins over Portland (4-1), Oregon (4-1) and Stanford (3-2). The season continued at the Stanford Tournament (April 9-10) where they went 1-3 with a second victory over Stanford (3-2). The Broncos then traveled to Hawaii where they fell 4-1 to the Rainbow Wahine, then regrouped to defeat Hawaii Pacific (5-0) in an exhibition match. Boise State defeated Sacramento State (4-1) to highlight its trip to the Sacramento State Tournament (April 15-16) to close out the regular season. On the final day of the season the Broncos hosted an exhibition tournament defeating Northwest Nazarene (4-0), College of Southern Idaho (5-0) and the College of Idaho (5-0).

The Glendale, Calif., native is a 1995 graduate of California State University San Bernardino where he played four years on the Coyotes’ men’s club volleyball team (1991-94). He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration with a marketing specialization. Garus has been married to the former Cindy Bench for 19 years and they have two children, Emily (14) and Trevor (10).
