April 20, 2017

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State beach volleyball closed out its home schedule on Thursday when it hosted an exhibition pairs tournament featuring the Broncos, the College of Idaho, Northwest Nazarene and Southern Idaho. Boise State, which is the only school of the four to officially sponsor the sport, battled through some harsh weather conditions to dominate the competition sending four of its seven pairs into the semifinals.

“Despite challenging weather conditions today we had a fun day at the sand courts,” said head coach Shawn Garus. “Everyone got a lot of matches in and I know the players from all four schools had a good time. I really liked the competition for some of our bottom pairs who were able to pick up some wins. I thought Kenna Hanses and Skye Southwick did a great job today, as did Laney Hayes and Jaymee-Lee Bulda. I look forward to us carrying some of this momentum into the weekend at Washington.”

None of today’s matches count in the pairs records but the Broncos went a combined 15-6 overall. Northwest Nazarene went 7-8, Southern Idaho was 8-10 and College of Idaho finished 5-8.

Boise State (5-4) will officially close the season this weekend when the blue and orange travels to Seattle for two matches against the Washington Huskies. They will play one Saturday on the campus of the University of Washington and one on Sunday at Alki Beach in west Seattle, both contests start at 12 p.m. (Mountain).

Sierra Nobley and Sabryn Roberts led Boise State Thursday afternoon going 4-0 which included winning their semifinal match against fellow Broncos Emily Sullivan and Janell Walley, who went 2-1 overall.

Jaymee-Lee Bulda and Laney Hayes went 3-0 during the event. They were scheduled to face the Boise State duo of Maddy O’Donnell and Maddi Osburn in the other semifinal but the match was canceled because of darkness. O’Donnell and Osburn went 2-0 in the competition after receiving a first round bye.

The team of Skye Southwick and Kenna Hanses reached the quarterfinals where they ran into fellow Broncos Nobley and Roberts who defeated the freshmen tandem. Southwick and Hanses finished the day 2-1 overall.

Celine Christensen and Maddie Simon finished the day 1-2 overall, as did the duo of Jensen Allen and Cassedi Simon.
