USAFA, Colo. - The Boise State women's tennis team rallied from three points down to defeat Wyoming 4-3 in a Mountain West Conference match at USAFA, Colo. After surrendering the doubles point and the first two singles matches completed, the Broncos dug deep to rally for the victory recording wins in the final four matches by Sammie Watson, Marlena Pietzuch, Megan LaLone and the match clincher by Manuela Pietzuch. The win is the second of the weekend in Colorado as the Broncos improved to 12-7 overall and 3-2 in league play.
"Today was an incredible college tennis match. Wyoming is such a strong team and we had to play some of our best tennis to come way with a win," commented head coach Beck Roghaar. "The doubles point was a close battle eventually going their way and after losses at No. 2 and No. 3 singles we found ourselves down 3-0. Our team showed great resolve to fight back to win this match. After wins at 1 and 5, we came back from a set down in each of the remaining matches to clinch the win. Our senior, Manuela Pietzuch, was incredible in the deciding match at No. 6 winning in a third set tiebreak. I'm so proud of our team effort today."
Doubles began with the Broncos' Megan LaLone and Bobbi Oshiro winning 8-2 on court three. Unfortunately, the team point went to Wyoming following tough losses by Boise State in the final two matches. The Pietzuch twins lost 8-6 at the No. 1 position followed by a heartbreaking 9-7 loss on court two by Sandy Vo and Morgan Basil. Vo and Basil still have a team-best doubles mark of 13-4 in duals this spring.
Singles opened with the Cowgirls collecting wins at the No. 3 and 2 positions. Boise State's Basil lost 6-1, 6-3 on court three to Alexandra Kovacs the 11th ranked played in the region, followed by Vo's 6-2, 7-5 defeat on court two against Simona Synkova, ranked ninth regionally.
That set the stage for the Broncos comeback from 3-0 down in the team score. The rally began on court five where Boise State's Sammie Watson put away the Cowgirls' Jessica Parizher 6-3, 6-4. Watson improved her dual mark to 11-6 in singles.
Marlena Pietzuch was the next off playing at No. 1 singles as the senior downed the ITA Mountain Region's fifth-ranked player in Veronica Popovici in straight sets 6-4, 7-5.
The final two matches went to three sets with both Broncos fighting back after dropping the first set. LaLone tied the team score for Boise State when she defeated the Cowgirls' Sasa Nemcova on court four 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. LaLone improved to 12-5 this spring and became the second Broncos this year to win 20 matches (20-9), Basil is 21-8 overall.
The decisive match went down to the wire as senior Manuela Pietzuch rallied from one set down to win in a third set tiebreaker that was decided 9-7. Pietzuch eventually downed Wyoming's Silviya Zhelyazkova 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7) to clinch the team victory for the Broncos and remain perfect on court six this spring with a 5-0 record.
Boise State will wrap-up this week's action tomorrow when the Broncos play this weekend's host the Air Force Falcons at noon Sunday.
