BOISE, Idaho – Boise State women’s tennis won two of three main draw titles Sunday at the Barb Chandler Classic in Boise. The Broncos entered the day with a chance to sweep all three of the main draw championships, two singles flights and one doubles flight, before bringing home the doubles and blue flight singles titles. On the day there were six titles played for at the tournament – Broncos playing in three – with consolation matches in both singles flights, as well as in doubles.

Lilian Poling and Wilhelmina Palmer opened the day by winning the doubles championship rallying from 7-6 down to defeat Eastern Washington’s duo of Faye Worrall and Zoey Nelson in a tiebreaker 8-7 (5).

Then shortly after winning doubles, the same two Broncos faced off for the championship of the singles blue flight draw. Palmer, a freshman from Stockholm, Sweden, won the day getting past sophomore Lilian Poling (West Point, N.Y.) for the title 6-3, 6-3.

Palmer finished the Barb Chandler Classic with two championships while going 4-0 in both singles and doubles. Poling was right behind winning one title to go with one runner-up finish. She also went a combined 7-1 on the weekend, 4-0 in doubles and 3-1 in singles.

It was a solid weekend for Boise State’s two Scandinavian freshmen who battled for singles titles in Boise. In addition to Palmer, Vanessa Timm from Kerteminde, Denmark, played for the singles orange flight main draw championship.

Timm took on Utah State sophomore Sophia Haleas in the title match. The Bronco rallied from dropping set one 6-1, to even it up by winning the second 7-5. The third set went back and forth as did the whole contest and went into a tiebreaker to decide the champion. Timm started the tiebreaker slow falling behind 4-0, then fought back to within 4-3. Unfortunately for Timm, Haleas managed to regroup and edged the Boise State freshman out for the title 7-4 in the tiebreaker.

Timm finished the tournament with a 4-2 overall record, 3-1 in singles and 1-1 in doubles with Jovana Kuljanin.

Boise State wrapped up its fall season at the Barb Chandler Classic going a combined 17-5 overall. The Broncos went 12-4 in singles – Poling’s loss was to another Bronco – and 5-1 in doubles. Boise State will open the spring team season on Jan. 20 against Whitman College in Boise.
