Broncos finish fifth in Mountain West

FRESNO, Calif. - Boise State volleyball closed the season with a heartbreaking loss Friday night in a five set marathon 19-25, 25-21, 25-20, 12-25, 15-9 at Fresno State in a Mountain West match in the Save Mart Center. After winning the opening set the Broncos found themselves down 2-1 after three periods. Boise State stormed back in the fourth set winning 25-12 before coming up short in the fifth as the Bulldogs claimed the 3-2 match victory. For the 10th time in the last 12 meetings the two teams went to five sets before deciding a winner. The Broncos finish the 2012 campaign at 17-15 overall and 8-8 in league play to finish fifth in their final MW campaign.

Alyssa Gammel led the Broncos with a her 15th double-double of the year on a career-high 28 kills and 11 digs. She hit a team-best 42.3 percent, to go with three blocks. Senior Liz Harden closed out her Boise State career hitting 40 percent with 21 kills and five blocks. Taylor Murphey added nine kills, and three blocks. Senior outside hitter Fiona Jones finished with two kills, three assists, 15 digs and two blocks. Casey Rose recorded 34 assists followed by Sarah Baugh with 19, senior libero Kersti Whitney had a team-high 25 digs in her final Bronco match.

Boise State finished the night hitting 31.7 percent with 68 kills, 66 assists, three service aces, 74 digs and 12.5 blocks. Fresno State countered at 24 percent hitting with 63 kills, 58 assists, two aces, 78 digs and nine blocks. Korrin Wild led the Bulldogs with 17 kills, followed by Maci Murdock with 15 kills and seven blocks.

The first set was close until the midway point when the Broncos pulled away for a 25-19 win. Boise State was up 16-15 when it began to take charge rolling off a 6-1 run for a 22-16 advantage. Harden had the last three kills of the set to give the Broncos a 24-18 lead, then teamed up with Taylor Murphey for a block to record the set winning point. Harden and Gammel led the blue and orange with five kills apiece.

The second set saw Boise State jump out to a 5-1 lead behind five points from Gammel before Fresno State took control. The Bulldogs led most of the way by one or two points before putting the set away 25-21. Gammell finished with seven kills for the Broncos.

Fresno State led the entire way by as many as five points before winning set three 25-20. Harden tried to keep the Broncos in the set with six kills and one block.

Boise State stormed back in set four racing out to a 20-6 lead before taking it 25-12. Gammel led the charge for the Broncos with eight kills while the team hit a match high 42.1 percent  and held the Bulldogs to 11.6 percent.

Fresno State took control in the fifth set taking a 9-4 lead early in which Boise State was unable to recover. The Broncos closed to within two points but the Bulldogs held on for the 15-9 set win.

This closes the season for the Broncos barring an invitation to the NCAA Tournament, there is no Mountain West Tournament this year.
