BOISE, Idaho - Boise State University released the 2013 volleyball schedule this morning featuring 29 matches, including 13 at home. The schedule features an expanded Mountain West schedule of 20 matches, as well as nine nonconference contests. The non-league opposition features a nice mix of national and region schools, including the renewal of the rivalry with the Idaho Vandals.

Other notable non-league opponents are 2012 NCAA Tournament participants the Washington Huskies of the Pacific 12 Conference and the Belmont Bruins of the Ohio Valley Conference.

Boise State will open the campaign by playing in three regular-season tournaments that will encompass all nine nonconference matches. It begins the weekend of August 30-31 with the annual Northwest Challenge featuring Washington, Gonzaga of the West Coast Conference, and this year's host and defending Big Sky Conference regular-season champions the Portland State Vikings.

The second tournament, Sept. 6-8, will see the Broncos travel east to Big Ten country for the Wildcat Challenge in Evanston, Ill., where they will play the Belmont Bruins, the Ivy League's Columbia Lions and their host the Northwestern Wildcats of the Big Ten Conference.

In the last of the three tournaments, Sept. 12-14, Boise State will go through its final MW tune-up by hosting the Courtyard Marriott Bronco Volleyball Classic in Bronco Gym. It will begin with the in-state match against the Idaho Vandals on Thursday night, Sept. 12, and conclude with matches against former Big West Conference opponent the North Texas Eagles and the Sacramento State Hornets out of the Big Sky Conference on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Following the expansion of the Mountain West this July with the additions of Utah State University and San Jose State University into the league making 11 members, the MW will institute a 20-match round-robin format for the conference season where each school plays everyone else twice. Once again the league will not sponsor a postseason championship tournament, instead choosing to award its automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament to the regular-season champion.

The week of Sept. 18-21 Mountain West action begins in earnest when the Broncos open conference with a pair of contests versus newcomer Utah State.  The one-time Big West Conference and Western Athletic Conference rivals will open the week in Logan, Utah, on Wednesday, Sept. 18, followed by the return match in Boise that Saturday, Sept. 21.  Last year the Aggies won the 2012 WAC regular-season championship.

That is followed by 10 weeks of non-stop conference action. Boise State's league schedule is loaded with a lot of home matches during the last half of the season in which the Broncos hope to capitalize on. Home MW matches are Utah State (Sept. 21), Air Force (Oct. 3), New Mexico (Oct. 5), UNLV (Oct. 24), 2012 co-champion San Diego State (Oct. 26), 2012 co-champion Colorado State (Oct. 31), Wyoming (Nov. 2), Fresno State (Nov. 14), San Jose State (Nov. 16) and the regular season finale versus long-time rival Nevada (Nov. 29). All home conference matches will be played in Bronco Gym and are tentatively scheduled to start at 7 p.m. (Mountain).
